Biggest Match in Club History Awaits Albany Rebels

The Albany Rebels will play its biggest match in club history on Saturday as they face the Buffalo Fenians in the New York Cup Final at Plumeri Sports Complex in Albany, N.Y. The Rebels and Fenians each have a 3-1 record in the league table and 1-1 in the head-to-head tiebreaker.

The Rebels open the day’s games against Syracuse at 1:30 p.m., though Syracuse (0-4) is not eligible for the New York Cup championship, and then play Buffalo at 2:30 p.m. Syracuse and Buffalo are scheduled to play each other at 3:30 p.m.

Albany’s players have turned up the intensity at the last few training sessions since their loss to Buffalo in June.

"The team has had an outstanding effort this year in terms of training and game play," said Rebels coach Tim Gerrish. "We are looking forward to playing in the New York Cup Final in front of our friends and family this weekend."

Each year, the Rebels have made strides in their development, both on the field in training and skill development, and off of it with recruitment efforts and fundraising.

“This competition represents the culmination of five years worth of work in establishing this club,” said forward and club chairman Cillian Flavin. “The team has grown so much over the past year and have really improved their skill set. Winning this competition in its inaugural year would be a great achievement.”

The matches on Saturday are free to attend.

Following a trophy presentation by the Midwest GAA Chairman, the Rebels will host Buffalo, Syracuse and the fans in attendance for a postgame party at the Irish Hall on Ontario Street. Live music will be performed by the Rebels’ own Padraig Timoney.
