Rebels Announce 2017 Team Awards

Ian Maher

The James Connolly Albany Rebels celebrated a successful season at their end of year party earlier this month at the Irish Hall in Albany. Ian Maher was named Player of the Year, Mike Nolan won Rookie of the Year and Brian Kanalley earned Most Improved Player.

Maher led the team in scoring this season. His pace from midfield creates constant problems for opponents and his finishing ability makes him a dangerous attacker.

“Ian is our leader on the field, driving on everyone around him and leading by example,” said Rebels chairman Cillian Flavin. “His direct running is a constant threat to the opposition goal and he was unlucky not to have scored a few more goals this year. He fully deserves this award as our stand-out player of the year!”

Nolan joined the Rebels this summer and brought an immediate dose of physicality to team training. The UAlbany student made his Gaelic football debut against Syracuse in the final leg of the New York Cup.

Kanalley has been a dedicated footballer for the Rebels since he joined the club. He settled into his role as a target forward this past season, improving his ball control and passing skills.

The Rebels continue indoor winter training on Friday, January 19 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Afrim’s Sports in Colonie. New players are always welcome.
