Match Preview: Rebels vs. Buffalo (6/15)

The James Connolly Albany Rebels begin the New York Cup on Saturday when they host the Buffalo Fenians at 12:30 p.m. at the Plumeri Sports Complex in Albany.

This marks the third annual competition for the New York Cup, being contested this year by Albany, Buffalo and Syracuse. Each team will play the other two clubs at home and away over the next two months.

Albany and Buffalo’s last match ended in a draw in the 2017 New York Cup final. Because of Albany’s loss to Syracuse earlier in the day and Buffalo’s win against Syracuse immediately afterward, the league title went to Buffalo.

“This is a big game for us,” said Rebels co-head coach Mark Adam. “We’ve had a great start to the season, but winning the New York Cup is our top goal. We need to set the tone on Saturday.”

The Rebels won the New York Cup in 2018 against Syracuse (Buffalo chose not to participate).

Admission is free for all Rebels home matches.

A free youth clinic, sponsored by the Albany Rebels, Capital District Celtic Cultural Association, GAA, Irish Global Games Development Fund and the City of Albany, will take place prior to the match. The youth clinic starts at 11 a.m. on the game field.

The Rebels will host Buffalo for a postgame party at the Irish Hall on Ontario Street immediately following the match. Rebels supporters are invited to attend.
